life, liberty & the pursuit of normalcy

“As parents, because we want to protect them so much, we are typically the first ones who treat them poorly by subconsciously denying them the right to have a “normal” life.”

Monica’s Mom, in reference to attitudes towards people with disabilities.

Monica & David (Documentary)

If you are the parent of a child with special needs, I dare you to read that without feeling like you took a bowling ball to the gut. This woman has been parenting a child with Downs for 35+ years. She knows the complexities of the whole special needs school debate. She lives the debate. So, as I sit around feeling mopey because I cannot manage to find the “perfect” kindergarten option for my kiddo and his specific challenges, this statement serves as a much needed gut check.

Maybe the schools aren’t the problem.

Maybe I am.

I urge you to watch Monica & David, especially if you know or love somebody with these kinds of challenges. It is, in a word, uplifting, and serves as a poignant reminder that everybody just wants to be loved. in fact, I think it should be required watching for SN parents, but then I’m weird like that.

The video was beautiful and touching and certainly points out the SN of SN. They need to have a life like we all do. Thank you for sharing.

I loved Monica and David! They had such brave and loving moms! We’ll all hopefully relax a bit as the kids get older.
